Safe, effective intravenous iron treatment administered by our experienced registered nurses at The Madison Medical Practice Hornsby. Restore your iron levels and regain your energy.

An iron infusion is a medical procedure that delivers iron directly into your bloodstream through a vein. This method is also known as intravenous or 'IV' iron therapy.
During the procedure, a small needle is placed into a vein and connected to a drip containing iron mixed with sterile saline solution. The iron solution is then slowly 'dripped' into your body, where it mixes with your blood and begins to replenish your iron stores.
At The Madison Medical Practice, our iron infusions are administered by experienced registered nurses in a comfortable clinical setting. We ensure each patient receives attentive care throughout the entire procedure.
If you are a new patient or attending from another practice, please note that your GP will need to refer you to the APAC service on 1300 732 503, as we only provide iron infusions for existing patients of our services.
Iron plays a vital role in keeping your body functioning properly
Iron is an essential mineral that your body needs to produce haemoglobin (Hb), the protein in red blood cells that gives them their distinctive colour. More importantly, haemoglobin carries oxygen from your lungs to every part of your body.
When your iron levels drop too low, your body cannot produce enough healthy red blood cells. This condition is known as 'iron deficiency anaemia' and can significantly impact your daily life.
Persistent tiredness and fatigue
Feeling lethargic and lacking energy
Difficulty carrying out your normal daily activities
Shortness of breath during physical activity
Pale skin and brittle nails
Difficulty concentrating
If you are experiencing these symptoms, speak to one of our consulting GPs who can arrange blood tests to check your iron and haemoglobin levels. Early detection and treatment can help you feel like yourself again.
Our team works closely with patients to develop appropriate care plans that address underlying causes of iron deficiency.
Have any questions?
Some people experience significant side effects from iron tablets, including nausea, constipation, stomach pain, or diarrhoea. If these side effects prevent you from taking oral iron consistently, an infusion may be a better option. Your GP can discuss whether this applies to your situation.
Certain medical conditions affect how well your digestive system absorbs iron from food or supplements. Conditions such as coeliac disease, inflammatory bowel disease, or previous gastric surgery can reduce iron absorption. In these cases, IV iron bypasses the gut entirely and delivers iron directly where it is needed.
If your body is losing blood faster than oral supplements can replace the iron, your doctor may recommend an infusion. This can occur with heavy menstrual periods, gastrointestinal bleeding, or other conditions. Our women's health services can provide support for menstrual related iron deficiency.
Sometimes there is a medical need to raise iron levels rapidly, such as before surgery or to avoid a blood transfusion. IV iron works much faster than oral supplements, making it the preferred choice when time is a factor.
Your GP will assess whether IV iron is suitable for you. It is usually recommended when oral iron is ineffective or not tolerated. While there is a small risk of allergic reaction, you will be closely monitored by our trained nursing team throughout the infusion.
Iron infusions at The Madison Medical Practice have an out-of-pocket fee of $160. Payment is required at the time of treatment and can be made by Cash, Visa, MasterCard, or EFTPOS. Fees may vary depending on your GP’s involvement. Medicare rebates also apply—please contact us for current pricing.
