What Is Ear Microsuction?

A modern approach to earwax removal

Ear microsuction is a gentle and safe procedure used to remove earwax (cerumen) or debris from your ear canal. Unlike traditional ear syringing, which uses water pressure, microsuction employs a small suction device to carefully extract wax buildup.

The procedure is performed by a trained GP using direct vision with a microscope or specialised camera. This allows the clinician to see clearly inside your ear at all times, making it one of the safest methods available for earwax removal.

At The Madison Medical Practice Hornsby, our experienced doctors perform ear microsuction with precision and care. The procedure typically takes only 15 to 30 minutes, and most patients notice an immediate improvement in their hearing. If you have concerns about your ear health, our health professionals are here to help.

Why Ear Microsuction May Be Recommended

Your doctor may advise ear microsuction if you experience any of the following symptoms or conditions. This procedure offers a safe alternative to traditional wax removal methods.

Blocked Ears or Reduced Hearing

Excess earwax buildup can muffle sounds and cause temporary hearing loss that microsuction can resolve quickly.

Ear Discomfort or Fullness

A sensation of pressure or fullness in the ear often indicates wax accumulation that requires professional removal.

Tinnitus Worsened by Wax

Ringing or buzzing sounds in the ears can intensify when earwax presses against the eardrum.

Hearing Aid Users

Clear ear canals are essential for optimal hearing aid function and comfort throughout the day.

History of Ear Problems

Previous ear infections or surgery may make microsuction the preferred method for safe wax removal.

Perforated Eardrum

When syringing is not suitable due to a perforated eardrum, microsuction provides a safer alternative.
