Comprehensive diagnosis and treatment for allergic rhinitis at The Madison Medical Practice Hornsby. From skin prick testing to immunotherapy, we help you breathe easier and live better.

Allergic rhinitis, commonly known as hay fever, is a widespread condition affecting up to 30% of Australians. It occurs when your immune system overreacts to airborne allergens, causing inflammation of the nasal passages.
Common triggers include house dust mites, grass pollens, tree pollens, weed pollens, animal dander, and mould spores. When these allergens enter your nose, they spark an immune response that releases histamine and other chemicals. This leads to the familiar symptoms of sneezing, nasal congestion, runny nose, and itchy eyes.
While allergic rhinitis affects people of all ages, it is more common in children and young adults. The condition can significantly impact your quality of life, affecting sleep, concentration, and daily activities. At The Madison Medical Practice Hornsby, we offer comprehensive assessment and treatment to help you find lasting relief.
Understanding what triggers your symptoms is the first step towards effective management
Allergic rhinitis develops when your body mistakenly identifies harmless substances as threats. The most common allergens include:
House dust mites - tiny creatures found in bedding, carpets, and soft furnishings
Grass, tree, and weed pollens - seasonal triggers that vary throughout the year
Animal dander - proteins from pet skin, saliva, and urine
Mould spores - found in damp environments both indoors and outdoors
Several factors can worsen your symptoms beyond direct allergen exposure. These include changes in temperature or humidity, air pollution, cigarette smoke, and strong odours. Identifying your specific triggers is essential for developing an effective management plan.
Our general practitioners work closely with you to understand your symptoms and identify the allergens causing your discomfort. For more detailed information about allergic rhinitis, you may find our article on allergic rhinitis beyond hay fever helpful.

Skin prick testing (SPT) is the gold standard for diagnosing allergic rhinitis. This simple, safe procedure identifies exactly which allergens trigger your symptoms. During the test, small amounts of common allergens are applied to your skin using a plastic lancet. If you are allergic, a small bump appears within 15 to 20 minutes.
Our 22 allergen panel tests for grass, tree, and weed pollens, dust mites, mould spores, and animal dander. SPT is more accurate than blood tests for airborne allergens. Testing is available with Dr Michael Shen for patients aged 6 years and above. The test takes approximately 30 minutes and costs $185 with a Medicare rebate of $36.45.
Have any questions?
You must avoid antihistamines for at least 7 days before your test. This includes common medications such as Claratyne, Zyrtec, Telfast, and Desonex. You should also stop using Dymista and Ryaltris nasal sprays during this period. These medications can interfere with test results and give false negatives.
The complete skin prick testing appointment takes approximately 30 minutes. This includes preparation, the test itself, and time to observe and record any reactions. Our nursing team at The Madison Medical Practice will guide you through each step of the process.
If your test results are positive, Dr Michael Shen will discuss minimisation strategies, specific treatments, and whether desensitisation immunotherapy may be appropriate for you. A tailored treatment plan helps you manage symptoms effectively. You can learn more about our fees and rebates for ongoing consultations.

If you have moderate to severe allergic rhinitis, we can create a treatment plan just for you. Options may include:
Ryaltris nasal spray – reduces inflammation and blocks allergic reactions.
Medicated sinus rinses – help clear allergens and mucus.
Antihistamines – relieve sneezing, itching, and runny nose.
If these treatments don’t fully help, allergy shots (immunotherapy) may be an option. This treatment gradually trains your immune system to tolerate allergens, giving long-term relief.
How it works: Monthly injections for 3–5 years.
Benefits: Reduces symptoms and may help prevent complications like asthma.
Who it’s for: Patients with severe or multiple allergies, or when medications aren’t enough.
Our doctors can check if this treatment is right for you. For ongoing care, registering with MyMedicare helps keep your treatment consistent.
