Breastfeeding is the normal and beneficial way to feed your baby. The World Health Organisation (WHO) recommends that exclusively breastfeeding has all the nutrients your baby needs for the first 6 months of life, essential for your baby’s growth, development and protection from illness and disease.

From 6 months onwards and for up to 2 years of age or beyond, its recommended that breastfeeding is sustained together with adequate complementary foods (SLHD 2017).

 

Here at the Madison Medical Practice our aim is to encourage, support and promote breastfeeding.  To provide women centred care, supported in their choice of infant feeding, respecting cultural practice and respectful relationships, through:

Antenatal Assessment Appointments

One on one appointment with our Midwife/Lactation Consultant to discuss any concerns you may have around breastfeeding.

Antenatal Breastfeeding Education Session

Offering small group sessions providing evidence based education and information to pregnant women on the importance and management of breastfeeding. The Aim of these sessions are to empower you by teaching practical skills to increase your confidence and awareness of what is normal.

These sessions will include information on:

  • How breastfeeding has important health benefits for both you and your baby’s health and wellbeing.
  • Practical advice including breast changes in pregnancy, those early days following birth, and how to establish your breastfeeding.
  • How to access breastfeeding information, support groups and services in the community.

Postnatal Appointments

Assessment with our Midwife/Lactation Consultant for mothers who are experiencing breastfeeding difficulties.

These appointments are based on an initial assessment where you will receive guidance and support to increase your skills and confidence to breastfeed. Evidence based information with a plan and follow up sessions as required to support you and your baby in your breastfeeding journey.
